A Long Way to Enter UI


University of Indonesia, that is well known as one of the top universities in Indonesia has produced more than 100.000 graduates since 1950. Since UI was born, there were more than once UI has changed the entrance test systems. Started with Proyek Perintis, Sipenmaru, UMPTN and SPMB last 2007. In 2008, UI held UMB together with five state universities in Indonesia: USU Medan, UIN Jakarta, UnHas Makasar, and UI itself. In 2008 UI also held SNMPTN together with all state universities in Indonesia. UI changes the entrance test system periodically because UI want to select the best students from any region in Indonesia. And nowadays, UI holds three kinds of entrance tests to select students: SIMAK UI, UMB, SNMPTN.
UI holds SIMAK UI as the first test. SIMAK UI is the newest UI entrance test. UI wants to be the fastest university that holds the entrance test, in order to get the students selectively. SIMAK UI is held in 40 cities in Indonesia and one city in Malaysia. Although UI got some critiques and problem with netwok disability but finally SIMAK UI can be held successfully. SIMAK UI offers three variant choices of bachelor and diploma programs: Vocation (for diploma program), Regular and Non Regular (for bachelor program). And 33 days after the test, the announcement of SIMAK UI is posted in mass media and UI website.
Second, UI holds UMB (Ujian Masuk Bersama). Same like the UMB before, UI holds UMB together with five state universities in Indonesia. But in 2009, UI only offers five percent chairs for regular bachelor program (six percent in 2008). The announcement of SIMAK UI is also posted in mass media and UI website.
The last test is SNMPTN. UI holds SNMPTN together with all state universities in Indonesia. The test is held together at the same time in any region in Indonesia. For this test UI only offers nine percent chairs for regular bachelor program. As the last way test, SNMPTN is sometimes full of tricks. Some students just gamble their luck on SNMPTN. Sometimes the result of SNMPTN is out of prediction. So all of the students not only have to study but also have to be lucky to pass SNMPTN.
Nowadays, UI holds three entrance test to select students. This happens because UI wants to get the best students fromm all regions in Indonesia. Therefore, students need to have more preparation to face the test. Students also need to be patient if they fail in the entrance test. (OS)
